Recorded live in the Geneva on June 23 2018 by Radio Suisse Romande, as part of the “Fête de la musique”, the disc is based on the idea of ​​using two loop machines, not so much, as generally done, to record short rhythmic loops on which to improvise, but to play imitative compositions (canons) for several voices. In the cd there are five “ricercari” (completely improvised) and five “canoni”, also used as a basis for subsequent melodic improvisations.
Bass/double bass players live by definition on the back of the stage, accompanying other musicians with dedication. At least once in his career, I believe that every bassist is tickled by the idea of ​​being on the front of the stage: often the easiest way to do it is to play a solo concert. Several times I have presented acoustic concerts in solo setting with the double bass, with mixed programs of classical pieces, original music, improvisations. My interest in contrapuntal writing led me to think of canon compositions (with voices that enter subsequently imitating each other) to play with myself, using a looper. Destiny wanted this project to see the light (ah!) by night, specifically in the largely sleepless nights that followed the birth of my first daughter: and in order to preserve a "pax vicinorum", it has been carried on with the electric bass - my first love, by definition never forgotten - and not with the double bass, which has been my main instrument for over twenty years. The occasion to present this small writing work was the Fête de la musique which is organized every year in June in Geneva, and to which I try to present a new project every year. In 2018 I was lucky to play on the national radio stage: the concert “Canoni e ricercari” was then broadcast live and was also recorded. Listening to it a few months later, I told myself that it might have been worth publishing it. The sound engineer who recorded the concert, Renaud Millet-Lacombe, agreed to master the whole concert (which is reproduced on the cd without cutting and without any form of editing), and I am pleased to see today the work published by NBB records, an important label for the world of double bass, and which is now presenting the first record of electric bass music in its catalog.
